MOSS KEEPS ON TICKING

The previous fall, eighty-six-year-old Johnny Moss was being wheeled into the operating room at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center to be outfitted with a pacemaker, when he remembered that the kickoff for the Houston Oilers–Dallas Cowboys game was in thirty minutes. He got on the phone with Jimmy Stefan, the manager of the Horseshoe’s poker room, and told him he wanted to bet $500 on Houston.

Minutes after emerging from the operating room, a dazed but not confused Moss asked a woman what the final score was. She had no idea.

“Well,” Johnny demanded, “call up the Fat Boy [his nickname for Stefan] and find out.”

“I couldn’t believe it,” recalls Stefan, who was there to answer the call. “It was this woman. She says, ‘Johnny wants to know the score of the Houston–Dallas game.’”

“Now that,” said Jim Albrecht, “is a gambler.”

Monday morning, Johnny was back playing poker at the Horseshoe.
