“This is a great test,” Biju said solemnly as she unfolded a long river that reached from one end of the room to almost the other.

“What is?” asked Peijing.

Biju picked up a paper fish and held it up to Peijing’s face.

“If this common carp can swim all the way up the Yellow River, it will face a raging waterfall at the very end. If it is brave enough to throw itself upstream and jump over the waterfall, a reward awaits.”

“And that is?” asked Peijing.

“The gods will lift it up into the sky; it will grow legs and become a magnificent dragon with a place among the heavens for all of eternity.”

From the doorway, Peijing could see Ma Ma bend over for no reason with her face in her hands.

“I think that is a foolish quest,” snapped Peijing.

“Fine. Stay an ugly carp, then,” snapped Biju. She folded the river back up roughly.

“I’m sorry,” said Peijing.

“Not everyone can be a dragon,” said Biju curtly, and that was that.
