CHAPTER FIFTEEN

For the second time in two days, Hayden stood opposite the interrogation room door, looking through the one-way glass, arms folded.

“That was pretty impressive back there,” said Marcus.

“I’m just glad no one got hurt,” Hayden said. In the moment, the surge of adrenaline in taking down Donovan had felt good, but once the feeling faded, she wasn’t sure it was the safest way to keep things going.

“Still,” he said, “someone had to put that guy in his place. He’s pretty belligerent. How do you think we’ll get him to talk?”

Hayden took a deep breath. She had been asking herself this very question for the past hour.

“I don’t know,” she admitted.

“I say we try to scare him. Tell him about the charges. Maybe tell him we have witnesses talking about an argument between him and Erica?”

Hayden shook her head. “I think that’s the wrong move. The harder we push, the more stubborn he’ll be. I think we just ask him our questions about the case, and if more evidence comes forward, we follow it.”

Marcus nodded thoughtfully. “The tactful approach?”

“You saw how he reacted when we pushed him. I think he’ll just feel cornered and become more reactive, not helpful at all.”

“Okay,” agreed Marcus. “I trust you.”

The door to the interrogation room swung open with a force that left no doubt about Hayden's mood. Even though she didn’t want to push him, she knew that she couldn’t act like a doormat either. She wanted to demand his respect without coming off as threatening.

Her jaw was set, her eyes ablaze, and her gait purposeful as she strode into the starkly lit chamber, each step resonating against the cold, hard floor. Donovan sat on the other side of the table, his demeanor cocky as ever, but there was a flicker—an almost imperceptible shadow—that crossed his face upon seeing the fury in Hayden's approach.

Without a word, Hayden pulled out the metal chair next to Marcus and settled herself down with a clatter that echoed off the walls. She could feel Marcus's tension beside her, the slight wince he tried to mask as he shifted in his seat, no doubt the remnants of the earlier scuffle leaving him tender. Yet, she noted the set of his mouth, a line of determination that told her he was committed to seeing this through, bruises be damned.

"Let's get to the point," Hayden said, her voice cool and steady, belying the storm of anger within. She fixed Donovan with a stare designed to unnerve, to dismantle the bravado he wore like armor. Today, she would be the one to stand up, to show Donovan that his reign of intimidation had come to an end.

“We’re here to discuss a very important case that we’re investigating regarding one of your coworkers.”

“Well,” he said, “Whatever it was, it couldn’t have been me. I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Hayden turned her head. He certainly acted belligerent and defensive for someone who hadn’t done anything wrong.

Donovan's fingers drummed an anxious rhythm on the steel table, a stark contrast to Hayden's stillness.
