Rafe slowly stretched out his uninjured shoulder, turning to look at the color patterns the stained glass windows left on the chapel floor. The higher the sun rose, the brighter the colors became. And was it his imagination or were all the blues and greens converging on the spot where he’d kissed Claire last night?

Even though he raised himself up as carefully as possible, his back scraped the wooden bench. The pain jolted him out of his thoughts. He had to get out of here. Vince’s time was running out and he needed to make a plan, not lay here thinking about how Claire Michaels felt in his arms last night.

With a grimace he took the plastic bag the medic had given him out of the deep pocket of the sweatpants. His back probably needed some of that ointment and a bandage change. Then he’d wake Claire and tell her goodbye. It would be better that way.

Heading to the bathroom, he passed the closed office door, hesitating a bit. Part of him wanted to wake her up so they could spend a little more time together before he left. Resigned to the circumstances, he willed his feet to keep going. Vince needs me. He pushed into the little bathroom, opened the baggie, and began to set out the supplies on the edge of the sink. Gingerly pulling off his t-shirt, he looked in the mirror to take stock of his injuries. New cut on his forehead. Stitches on left side under his arm. Burns on his back. And his ever-aching knee. Nothing that will kill me.

Hearing a door close, he poked his head out. Claire was going down the hallway toward the chapel, carrying her gun belt in her hand. “Claire, I’m in here.”

She turned immediately and came toward him. “I’m not interrupting a private moment, am I?”

He smiled. “No. Good morning.” Her hair was tousled, as if she’d just rolled out of bed and finger-combed through it. The feel of it in his own fingers last night rose in his mind. Like silk. “Did you sleep well?” He clenched his hands so he wouldn’t be tempted to reach out and touch it again.

“Let’s just say morning came a little too quickly. How about you? Did you sleep at all?”

“Some.” He motioned toward his back. “I’m trying to rebandage my back and get some ointment on it, but I’m having a tough time doing it myself. Feel like helping me?”

“Sure.” She squeezed around him into the bathroom.

He turned to watch her, not realizing how much smaller the bathroom was with both of them in it. Should he stay where he was? Go back to the sink? She looked at him in the mirror as if trying to figure out what he was doing. His gaze fell on her bandage curling at the edges, giving him something to say that wouldn’t make her feel awkward that he’d been staring at her. “I should probably take a look at your neck, too.”

She didn’t argue with him, just started getting a bit of gauze wet.
