In the 1880s, prospectors combed the Grand Canyon for mineral wealth, but few prospectors made any profit.

In the 1880s, prospectors began combing the canyon for minerals. In 1889, railroad surveyor Robert Stanton wanted to build a railroad through the entire canyon, even if he had to blast away the cliffs.

The canyon held little gold or silver, but it did have some copper, which was valuable as wiring in the new age of electricity. Still, mining inside the canyon took a great deal of trouble and expense.

Miners had to build a trail to the mine and run a team of mules to haul out ore. When they got to the rim, the railroad was still fifty miles away. Only a half dozen Grand Canyon mines ever made much of a profit.

This quest for riches was a big contrast with John Wesley Powell, who explored from a love of nature and scientific curiosity. A few years after his river expedition, Powell brought an artist, Thomas Moran, to the canyon. Moran painted a giant picture which was hung in the US Capitol building. Americans began realizing that the canyon was a unique natural wonder.
