ALISTAIR

Based on the books, I had expected Hatter to have a small house with a thatched roof somewhere deep in the forest. Nothing prepared me for the sprawling palatial residence we arrived at after our pleasant walk through the woods. The mansion was practically a castle, complete with top hat turrets and heart-shaped windows.

My stupid mouth reacted before my brain could stop it. “Wait, Hatter lives here?”

Bianco chuckled at my reaction but not unkindly. “Yes, when he’s not traveling for fittings for his prestigious clients like King Rei.”

Given how generous the ruler had been to me and how luxurious everything surrounding him was, it made sense that he paid Hatter well enough to live like the king he dressed. But it was still a shocking display of wealth that left me in awe as Bianco led me up the long stone driveway. I wondered if there would be any suspiciously naked cherubs on Hatter’s ceiling?

The narrow road expanded into an expansive courtyard that was full of greenery and roses of every color imaginable. In the center was an enormous fountain that featured a giant butterfly standing on an amethyst top hat. The glittering gems decorating it were dazzling in the dappled sunlight filtering through the trees. Its beautiful wings flapped, sending spray cascading everywhere in a stunning water show that left me captivated.

It was such an impressive display that it took a few moments for it to register the significance of having a butterfly standing on a hat sculpture fountain. “Wait, is this supposed to be Vivalter and Hatter?”

“Indeed. He commissioned it as an artistic celebration of their friendship.” The corner of Bianco’s mouth turned up as he studied the fountain. “He claims not to understand why anyone would consider this a romantic declaration.”

“The butterfly is so beautiful. How could it not be?” It was the most amazing fountain I had seen before. Those two had to be fucking, right?

“Welcome to the mad world of Hatter.”

A servant greeted us at the door with a low bow as we approached. The man was the first genuinely aged person I had seen since I had arrived, making me wonder how old he was. He was short in stature, with gray hair and a kindly face. His stylish teal uniform, trimmed with gold embroidery, was tailored to perfection. “Welcome, Honorable Bianco and guest.”

“I hope you’ve been well, Pellagrio,” Bianco said with a friendly smile. He gestured at me. “This is Alistair Hargreaves.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Pellagrio.” I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to offer to shake his hand, since Bianco hadn’t prepped me on the rules of dealing with servants in Wonderland outside of the king’s palace. It was easier to wait for his reaction and go from there.

He stared at me with wide brown eyes. “You are very kind to say so, sir. Please follow me.”

We followed Pellagrio through the immaculately decorated home that rivaled the Palace of Hearts for its luxurious grandeur. It was giving me cognitive dissonance compared to how different the reality was from the simple illustrations about Hatter’s tea party.
