All the handicapped spots were taken at the hospital, so I parked in the circle drive.

“Isn’t this supposed to be for dropping off or picking up a patient?” Eleanor asked.

“Yes, but I’ve seen cars parked far longer than the five-minute time allowed according to that sign.”

Eleanor sighed. “Go ahead and park here, but I thought Stuart didn’t want us drawing attention to ourselves.”

“You’re right. Whatever was I thinking? I know I was thinking I didn’t want to walk a long distance with my hip bothering me today.”

“How about if you get out here and I do the parking.”

“Thanks, Eleanor. You’re a real pal.”

Eleanor dropped me off closer to where the elevator leading to the morgue was located. I winced when she took off, the tires screeching as she cut off another car to claim a parking space. She ignored the man who ranted at her with a shake of his fist.

I headed inside so hopefully nobody would notice me. It was embarrassing when Eleanor did that, but I only have myself to blame for agreeing to let her park the car.

Eleanor climbed into the elevator with me, and it clunked to the basement. I rang the morgue door, but nobody answered it.

“Nobody’s there,” a security guard said.

I pulled down my floppy hat. “I was hoping we could catch the coroner before he left for the day.”

The older man smiled. “He’s in his office on the third floor, room—”

“We know, thank you,” Eleanor said.

“It appears I should have parked the car,” I said. “Smitty’s office is on the other side of the hospital.”

“Oh, I thought you were gonna give me flack about how I claimed the parking spot.”

“Why would I do that?” I laughed.

Eleanor and I pulled our hats down when we passed Dr. Thomas. It wouldn’t be a good thing if someone saw us at Smitty’s office. I didn’t need a lecture from the sheriff.

Eleanor and I poked our heads into Walter Smitty’s office.

“Are you busy?” I asked.

“It depends on who you are,” Smitty fired back.

Eleanor and I walked inside and removed our hats and fanned our faces with them. “How about for us?” I asked.

Smitty leaned back on his chair and smirked. “Why I don’t think I’ve ever seen you two looking so—”

“Gorgeous?” Eleanor asked as she batted her eyelashes.

“Dressed alike,” he said, but I self-consciously smoothed my hair back for effect.

“How long is the autopsy of the victim going to take?” I asked.

“What victim is this?” Smitty asked as he opened a paper folder.

“How many victims are you doing autopsies for?” I asked.

“I asked you first.” He smiled.

“The remains found at the Singing Bridge,” Eleanor clarified. “You’re going to get Agnes all worked up if you don’t answer her question.”

“This is how us coroners have our fun.” He pulled out his phone. “Can I take your pictures?”

“No!” I spat. “We don’t want anyone seeing us with hat hair.”

“It’s too bad. I was planning to enter it at the funniest photo contest at the community center.” Smitty shrugged. “I finished the autopsy, but he hasn’t been identified yet.
