Janey was caught in her own version of Hell.
She was not in a pit of sulfur and darkness. She was revisiting her early teens, right after the sun started to die and people turned savage. When leaders panicked and released nukes for the sake of it. Hunger, cold, and disease became a part of life. Janey saw her father go crazy with grief and turn into this monster that enjoyed drawing blood from her back with his belt. She was again back to her innocent self, the young girl. Defenseless, knowing that other men donât abuse her because her father was a gang leader and the camp protector, but at the same time being beaten and abused by the one closest to her that was meant to put her well-being first. A fragile girl, she knew that, if she ran away, she would not make it far, so she stayed, waiting, hoping that she would be saved. That was the time when Janey understood that we are all so awfully alone on this world. There is no other constant to life than the self. With each beating she got closer to turning into her own savior, only when a human understands and accepts that the salvation is within and of her own powers, a part of the compassion for others is chipped away.
Janey watched her own sad evolution like a movie and a very vivid experience at the same time. She was detached and connected to it at the same time.
Young Janey was so alone and lost. She remembered the moment she saw herself changing when she raped that boy with a knife. She would never forget his face and the way the act made her feel. It was the birth of her new self. In a way, that boy became her portal to her new world, like a womb, because the new survivor rose out of his blood and his discharges. She saw the act of killing him as a necessary evil. We are all born in blood and screams.
The night before Janey killed her father was a night like every other. Since she had become a gang member, she had been respected and safe. Men and women alike tried to get with her in the hope she would offer them protection and a bigger share of supplies. So many people perished in the first year of the catastrophic death of the sun that there was enough left to scavenge. You had to be fearless and risk meeting Crows, deaders. or other rival gangs.
