Chapter 7

Riding the Wave

The day was over, and it was finally time to go home. She had worked as hard as usual, was tired, and was ready for things to end. Tanya quickly looked at her messages as she headed towards the door and was floored by the number. She read the one from Alex first. It warned that a family was looking for her to help them. They were waiting for her as she exited the house. The car they arrived in and the clothes they wore was all they had, and five children were in tow.

Two were their own, one was adopted, and two were from her sister, who ran off and left them with her. They were raising all of them as if they were their own, but it was hard. Tanya admired what they were doing, but they clearly needed help. Neither of them had a job. They needed employment and a home, which the free store could not provide.

Tanya called her mother first to check and see if she had any apartments available, all she had was a two-bedroom, but they said they would take it. So, they headed over there, where they met up with Tanya's mom. The couple didn't have the rent, but they had the security deposit. So, her mother let them move in with the understanding they would pay the rent out of their first paycheck.

Since she let the crew take the crew truck to Arial’s, she'd been riding with the couple. Now that they had the apartment and the keys, they went to Ariel’s to get the truck. While there, they ate supper, and Tanya discussed their situation with Ariel. After they finished eating, she got the crew truck, and they followed her to the free store. Ariel reminded her that a family could live in an apartment above the free store temporarily while they got back on their feet.

Tanya talked to the manager, found out the apartment was available, and explained to him about the second family with no place to stay and no money. She was sure they would get to work quickly, but they needed help until then. The manager agreed to let them stay. Tanya said she would bring them after the first family was settled.

They went to the furniture side and quickly found everything they needed. Thankfully, appliances were furnished in the apartments. They needed furniture for their bedroom and a twin bed for the children. She was amazed they found precisely that, plus the dressers they required. It took two trips, but they managed to get it all to the apartment. The other furniture was not essential for right now.

She took them through the free store helping the children pick the things they needed and letting the adults choose for themselves. Those items went in the car because the truck was already full. Only she and the male returned to load the selected furniture the second time. A large table came in as a donation with six chairs.
