Best to Keep Quiet When Concussed

‘Primrose. It was Primrose,’ insisted Mindy. She was highly agitated and arguably one of the deadliest people in the hall. She wanted to ask Mrs Green some ‘questions’. By which she probably meant knock her out, tie her up, and apply methods of questioning not employed since the dark ages.

‘We don’t know that,’ argued Reed.

I was sitting up and massaging some of my bruised areas. Justin brought me a chair from one of the tables in our booth and, together with Mindy, helped me up and into it.

‘She threatened to get even with me,’ I told the head of hotel security while wincing from the effort.

‘And she was watching,’ added Mindy triumphantly as if it were all the additional evidence required.

A minute had passed since the heavy light fitting miraculously detached from the ceiling and fell to earth. I was too woozy from shock to get to my feet, but I badly wanted to check on Vince.

‘Is he okay?’ I begged to know. ‘Mindy, can you see if he is badly hurt?’

Mindy left my side to do as I asked. The press of people around him were being corralled by members of Reed’s security team and making space for first aiders to get to him. Mindy forced her way close enough to see, and as she squeezed in to look over the head of a shorter person, I saw that it was Melissa, the event organiser.

‘I saw the whole thing,’ she revealed as she came to check on me. ‘What he did was so brave. Do you know who he is?’

‘Is he hurt?’ I asked, rudely ignoring her question.

A little startled by the passion in my words, Melissa glanced back at the stricken P.I. before mumbling, ‘He’s out cold and there is a nasty lump on his skull. I don’t think anything is broken though.’

He caught a heavy piece of falling steel with his head. Was his brain going to be okay? I knew concussion was not to be taken lightly, so he might look to be in one piece, but it could be hours or days before we knew for sure. What if he was in a coma?

The chilling thought stole through my body, making me feel cold, and then immensely relieved when we all heard Vince come around.

He coughed and winced and mumbled something I couldn’t catch. Still worried my legs might not support me if I tried to get up, I continued to peer at Vince through the gaps in the crowd. That is until someone deliberately chose to block my view.

‘You told me he went home, Felicity.’ I looked up to find Edward frowning down at me. He hadn’t snarled his words, if anything they came out devoid of emotion, but when he spoke again, there was no mistaking how disappointed with me he was. ‘Did the two of you spend the night together laughing about me?’

I was horrified by his question. ‘No, Edward! How could you think such a thing?’

The jeweller pursed his lips and crossed his arms.
