Chapter Twenty

It was a day’s travel by boat from Feesia to Dartilia. The two continents were the closest to each other.

They spent two days talking to villagers in nearby towns about the small village in Bancroft’s vision. Memories of the village were different from person to person, but they gathered enough information to piece together the location. They returned to the ship every night to devise a plan.

“We should split up,” Khaly said.

Bancroft groaned. “Nothing good ever happens when we split up.”

“It’ll be fine,” she continued. “The three of us with Brutara, Neshula, and Orantheio will go to the caves.”

“Why Brutara and Orantheio?” Chaith asked.

“Brutara will be able to get around comfortably with his ability to climb pretty much any surface. Orantheio is our fire starter. In this weather everything is going to be super damp.”

“We all should just go,” Jahallah said.

“Actually, I wouldn’t mind staying behind to work on these translations a bit more,” Thennick said.

“Who’s going to translate the monument when we get there?” Jahallah asked.

“You don’t need to, just write everything down and bring it back.” He smiled, pleased with himself.

Jahallah pointed at him. “You just don’t want to go in the caves.”

He pointed back. “You’re absolutely right, I do not.”

“That’s fine,” Chaith said. “The captain and I need to work out the plans for our next destination, wherever that may be.” He sounded slightly defeated.

Khaly nudged him under the table.

“I’m pretty tired, I think I may be getting sick,” he admitted.

Khaly put her hand on his forehead. “You are a bit warm. We’ll leave Neshula behind to help you get better.”

“What if something happens?” Bancroft asked. “We may need a healer.”

“Nothing is going to happen. It’s going to be fine. It’s better she stays here and help him rest and mend.”

“What about the other two?”

“They can stay behind as well. It will be easier with a smaller group.”

There was a reluctant agreement among them. Thennick returned to his notes and the journal while Jahallah did her best to help where she could. Chaith returned to their cabin with Neshula to rest, and Khaly followed Bancroft to the deck with the other four dragons. They stood against the rail, a drizzle of rain spraying down on them. He stared out into the harbor and she watched him.

“I’m so tired, Kay.”

Khaly nodded. “We all are.”

“How did we become the sole fighters in this war?”

“We’re not.”

“We are. I don’t see anyone else out here.” His voice rose, anger flashing across his face.

“They aren’t fighting the sisters directly.” Khaly tried to calm him. “There are pockets of battles happening everywhere. You know that. The Underground is taking back towns and cities almost every day. We’re pushing the Guild army out of the continents. It takes time.”

He dropped his head into his hands.

“What’s this really about?” she asked, turning to face him.

Bancroft pulled his hand away from his face and ran his thumb over the opposite palm. The scar was smooth, the skin puckered. “It just feels like we’re the only ones suffering.
