Chapter 18

Burn it Down!

I didn’t sleep great that night. I was worried about scavengers and had a bad dream about killing Skeeter. I guess my conscience was feeling guilty for killing another human, even if he was trying to kill me to steal my things.

Logically, I knew he was a bad person and the world was better off without people like him, but it was hard not to feel guilty for aiding the System in reducing the human population. I should be saving the world, after all.

Grumbling and feeling more than a bit grumpy, I got up, ate an MRE for breakfast, and then packed up my cot and other miscellaneous things just in case someone came by while I was in the dungeon. I was hoping Morgan and her family would show up at some point, but it was a dangerous world out there. She might not make it back.

That thought made me sad. I wasn’t looking at her as a potential love interest or anything, but she was clearly intelligent, and she could make a great person to watch over the shelter when I eventually had to leave. I wanted to see this place put to good use, and I couldn’t be around if I was going to go out and find more dungeons.

Speaking of the dungeon, it might take more than one run to gain a level at this point, but even if it took an entire day to gain a level, that was still fantastic progress. At this rate, I would be Level 20 before the end of the week. I couldn’t express how happy I was about that; it was simply amazing.

It had taken well over three years to hit Level 20 during my first life. Of course, that was because of all the downtime spent healing and the fact that I needed to find new parties to adventure with practically every time I delved. When you were hurt with low stats, it would take weeks to mend and get back into fighting shape, and most of the party would come out of a dungeon with wounds, so if you were lucky enough that a healing potion dropped, only one of you would get to benefit.

Often, by the time you were well again, your party had moved on without you and found a replacement. Now you had to go and find another party and hope they were decent enough that you survived the PUG. PUG being an old gaming term for ‘pick up group’, aka a group of random strangers you join to try and complete a quest with. In life, just like in games, random groups of strangers don’t usually work out well.

My last group is a perfect example. They betrayed me for a piece of loot I didn’t even want. The world needed fewer people like that and more good, decent folks like Morgan.

Such were my thoughts as I stood before the dungeon entrance again. The portal looked far less vibrant than it had the first time I went through it.
