Chapter Thirty-Four

It wasn’t that Sophia thought Hiker believed she’d fail to find entrances to Mother Nature’s temple. He obviously had his doubts, but she had more and knew she needed to leverage every single one of her advantages to be successful. And since her last conversation with Liv, her sister had been blowing up her phone, obviously wanting an update on the “adventure” she had gone on.

As soon as she had rested, Sophia called Liv from her four-poster bed. She didn’t even care that her sister would see her on Facetime with her hair matted to her head and large bags under her eyes. Liv had seen her at her worst, and that was one of the best parts of sisters—they loved you no matter what you looked like or what you’d been through.

“There you are,” Liv said, answering the phone right away. She conversely looked very put together, her long blonde hair draped over her shoulder and warmth in her Beaufont blue eyes. Sophia missed her intensely.

“Yeah, sorry, I had to go rescue a dragonrider from electrocution,” Sophia said, smiling.

Liv sighed. “If I had a quarter for every time I heard that.”

“You’d have a quarter?” Sophia asked.

“Exactly,” she answered.

“How is the demon you had in a headlock?”

“Dead,” Liv stated. “I made it as painless as I could.”

“After you tortured him for information,” Sophia added.

“Well, yeah,” Liv said. “It took me twenty whole minutes to get the location for the Fountain of Youth out of him. I think I’m losing my touch.”

Sophia stretched out of bed. “Have you destroyed the fountain, then?”

“I was just about to. Want to watch?” Liv turned the phone around to reveal a large, mesmerizing golden fountain surrounded by statues of men, women, and animals. It reminded Sophia of the Trevi fountain in Rome, although there was something more magical about this one.

“You’re going to destroy it now?” Sophia asked, having mixed reactions about getting rid of something with such a reputation.

“Well, now is better than later since I have a date with a hot demon hunter,” Liv said, turning the phone back around to show her face. “And you know that Father Time isn’t a patient man. He always wants stuff done an hour before he orders me to do it. Completely unrealistic expectations, but what can I do? He’s sort of in charge since he’s one of the most powerful entities in the world.”

“How are you going to destroy the fountain?” Sophia asked.

A glint of mischief sparked in Liv’s eyes. “Magical tech, of course.”

“Speaking of which,” Sophia began, “did you ever figure out anything about those pictures I sent you of the aircraft that killed a dragon and rider?”

“Yeah,” Liv stated. “They are fueled with magical tech.”

Sophia sighed. “Right. I sort of found that out afterward when one chased me. I was hoping for a source on their maker.”

“I know,” Liv said, her tone filled with disappointment. “Whoever is behind that is brilliant at covering their tracks. I haven’t been able to determine anything that leads me to a magician or organization.
