Here is a shorter version of the above meditation that can be used instantly anytime you are caught in a strong fear:
First, think of a friend who has a similar fear and extend kindness to this person by breathing him/her into the center of the chest on the in-breath. On the out-breath, say the line, “May you be healed in your difficulty.”
Then, on the very next in-breath, breathe the sensations of your own fear into the center of the chest and, on the out-breath, extend kindness to yourself in the same way you did toward the friend.
For some reason, when we tap into the innate desire to wish another well, we can more easily channel that wish for well-being toward ourselves.
