“Crashing into the water elemental is your brilliant plan?” O’Meara chuckled.

“Not like we can do anything fancy while you’re flying this death trap,” I said. It was true. Magi could only channel one plane of reality at a time. O’Meara’s car had modifications to help her control it, but she was the rocket engine.

“I like them simple.” O’Meara waited until we reached the top of our arc, when the weightlessness lifted me from my seat and made her hair expand into a halo of red before she slammed on the accelerator.

Flames roared around us and the seat slammed into my backside. Dead center of our windshield Big Stompy and the water elemental grew from their respective specks.

Big Stompy stood in a boxer’s pose. The water serpent’s body had surrounded him, the head rearing up over Stompy’s body, mouth opening into the froth of the breaking wave. The glowing blue orbs that were its eyes flickered in surprise before its head splashed over our windshield. My wards blinded me as my body hurled into the straps that lashed me to the seat. O’Meara grunted as blackness narrowed our vision. I heard a scream like that of a tea kettle loaded with pain. Beyond the windows were walls of bubbling fluid. It swallowed us! I realized.

“Ha! You mean it bit off more than it could chew!” O’Meara laughed and slammed her power through a different circuit, heating the skin of the car to rock-melting levels. The effect was the combination of a thunderclap and a whoosh. The world outside went white. “There’s smoke in your eyes!”

“Steam,” I corrected.

O’Meara shot us back into the air as magic lashed out toward us. Yellow, kinetic energy and something. . .white blasted my magical sight.

“Was that a tass bomb!?!” O’Meara nearly screeched as we pulled free of the steam cloud. The water elemental had been annihilated, but the thing’s corpse was a ten-story high mushroom cloud of steam obscuring all normal sight of the battlefield. “I thought only Rudy knew how to do that?”

“Put us down!” I growled.

I couldn’t see anything and if we were fighting someone with tass bombs that meant our wards wouldn’t be enough. I broke our bond and sought silver cords. I seized Carey’s and sent Mr. Bitey racing down it.

EEEEEEeee! Carey’s thoughts were a panicked screech as she accepted the connection, all her focus on the giant green butterfly that filled her vision. “It’s right in front of us.”

Tell Rudy they have tass bombs. I shoved the thought into Carey’s head and she repeated it.

“Now Oric’s stealing my ideas!? I’m gonna feed that bird some cashew flavored buckshot!” Rudy swore as the wind howled outside the mech. I could hear gears starting to grind. “Hurry up, Thomas! I’m pinned down.”

Working on it. I broke the connection and rebonded O’Meara in the space of an eye blink.

“Bloody Ashes, Thomas, warn me before you do that!” O’Meara seethed. We were not on the ground, rather we were way above the scene. The steam
