Iressa materialized in the home she’d purchased on Earth through a series of middle-persons. This was located in a remote section of the country’s mid-west. Since portals covered great distances in an instant, she felt no obligation to be close to the action in Pittsburgh except when absolutely required. Unfortunately, that bastard Lechnas has declared it is now required. And then some.

When she’d first accepted the invitation to join the circle and later, when she’d agreed to work directly with Lechnas, leading an army personally into battle was definitely not among the things she envisioned doing. Nothing had changed since then, but she was more or less stuck with the task now. If she sent a proxy and they succeeded, it would diminish her in the wizard’s eyes and he would almost certainly and justifiably break their partnership. If a representative failed, he would be entirely within the bounds of propriety to kill her for her refusal to accept her responsibility.

She walked from the small entry room through her living and dining rooms on the way to the bedroom. There were only six pieces of furniture in the whole home—dining table, couch, coffee table, bed, dressing sofa in her walk-in closet, and nightstand. The emptiness of the space appealed to her and the white walls and open atmosphere soothed her ever-present sense of being trapped. That feeling had been with her for as long as she could remember but had grown exponentially since her involvement with Lechnas and his minions.

Even if I could go back, I’d probably do the same thing again. She sighed, turned the handles on the double-sized bathtub, and poured a capful of lavender oil into the stream of water. A trip to the closet to deposit her clothes in the basket to be washed and retrieve a robe was the only remaining task, and once it was completed, she sank gratefully into the steaming hot liquid and let her eyelids drift closed. The heat was a balm to her muscles, especially after the always chilly courtyard. She snorted inwardly. Why he chose to meet there instead of someplace decent is beyond me. She considered that further. But he doesn’t usually do anything without a good reason. So what was the purpose?

Her mind examined possibilities but failed to find any worth latching onto. From there, her thoughts turned to practicalities and strategies to win a battle in the kemana. Eventually, she forced herself to consider the possibility of defeat and what would come after. What can be gained if we fail to kill Lady Alayne? She answered herself out loud. “Well, there is considerable treasure to be had in the palace. That’s something.”

Her mental voice countered, We can steal treasure whenever we like. How is that useful?

She frowned. “I can’t believe I’m arguing with myself. Maybe I really am losing my mind. Not money treasure. Magical treasure. Artifacts. Power.” She sensed agreement from the other side of her mind. “Right. That’s something. If we used the attack
