Chapter 10

“Strong women are absolutely unpredictable.”

–Anne Rice

The Vampire Lestat

“She went thataway!” Doris announced and bounced up and down.

John ran through the back door but returned a few seconds later.

“No one’s there,” he said. “But I guess I should get going and do my job.”

His eyes flicked toward me, and I gathered that he wanted to talk to me. I followed him out the front door.

“You look engaging in dungarees,” he said, gathering me in his arms.

His eyes were doing the smoldering thing he did so well. Even though they were Remington’s eyes, I could sense John behind them.

“I love the smoldering thing,” I said out loud.

“Excuse me?”

“You smolder. It drives me crazy and makes me feel warm and toasty inside, like my belly is baking cookies.”

“Your dungarees are giving me a physical reaction as well.”

“You could take me behind the dumpster and ravage me there,” I suggested.

He cupped my cheek with his hand and smoldered some more. “After waiting hundreds of years, I don’t think I should claim your maidenhead behind a dumpster full of used flushable wipes.”

John was such a romantic.

“Do you want to go with me on my arrest? I don’t have a lot of experience doing Remington’s job. It would be nice to have company. I don’t think Vlad can get us on the road, either.”

I accepted immediately, of course. “Why is there an arrest warrant out for Alexis?”

“A witness came forward. A store clerk who sold her liquid nicotine. It looks like she murdered a local man with it.”

We got in his car, and I gave John directions to the farm. Then, I gave him a rundown on Febreze’s murder and all about Hank and the suspects, ending with the argument between Alexis and Ted in the alley.

“I heard something about this case, but I didn’t know all that,” John said. “It was Remington’s case before I showed up. In my day, scientists never murdered anyone,” he added with a big dose of disapproval.

“You burned scientists at the stake in your day,” I reminded him.

“Not burned. Hanged. And that’s because they were blasphemers. I had no choice in the matter.” He chuckled. “Can you imagine if I went around hanging blasphemers nowadays? I’d run out of rope.”

I shifted in my seat. “Can we change the subject? We’re heading into an uncomfortable area for me.”

“Of course,” John said. “That was insensitive of me. Let’s focus on Alexis. Your friend Hank will be happy that the killer will be behind bars and he will have access to all of the dental work he needs.”

He was right. Hank would be relieved, but I wouldn’t be the one who solved the case. A clerk was the one to finger the killer, and it had nothing to do with me.

I gnawed on the inside of my cheek and tried to push away my disappointment. I was ashamed of myself. The important thing was to get justice for Febreze.

When we arrived at the farm, John drove Remington’s police car right up to the group of tin-roofed shacks.
