Chapter 5

Alex slowly opened his eyes and took a deep breath.

Even that hurt.

He’d hoped that with the oxygen mask on his face and having been in a hospital bed for a while, he’d be feeling better. Nope. He felt worse.

His eyes glanced around the room to see Detective Jessica Valverde sitting in an incredibly uncomfortable looking hospital chair reading a fashion magazine. He had no idea she read those… she didn’t seem like the type to care what Princess Kate was wearing these days or whether Caroline Kenner stayed with her current man. Had he discovered a Jessica Valverde secret? Alex tucked the information away and involuntarily took another breath.

Big mistake.

He almost coughed but managed to suppress it. It would hurt worse if he let that take its course. Jess still hadn’t looked up.

She’d been ushered into the hospital room despite her protests. He’d been just awake enough to hear it all, and drowsy as hell from some muscle relaxer they’d given him.

The nurses had quickly realized she was a cop and they’d quickly waived the “no visitors” rule and put her in the room to sit with them while they slept. She hadn’t watched TV or talked on the phone, though he’d occasionally caught her tapping out messages or playing games and she’d snuck out into the hall once or twice. All of this had been caught by his lazy eyes and drug addled brain. Jess seemed to think they’d been asleep the whole time.

When he’d been loaded into the ambulance here, he’d heard Jones tell her to stay with them.

“These are our guys,” the Sergeant had said. Then, “Valverde, you and me, we’re gonna make this happen.”

“Of course,” Jessica had replied quickly, and Alex still had no clue what kind of conspiracy his apartment fire had caused. But as he lay there and thought about it, he realized paranoia was probably a side effect of the drugs. It was for many street drugs—something he’d learned as a cop. So, he shouldn’t make any assumptions right now.

Had her Sergeant wanted Jessica at the hospital? They were playing Good Samaritan. Jessica’s phone rang again, and she quickly jumped up and stepped out of the door but didn’t close it behind her.

Somehow, she still hadn’t caught on that he was awake. Just as he thought that, Alex caught a snore from Rex’s side of the room. Well, at least his roomie was sleeping like a baby. Still, it looked as though Jessica Valverde was not sitting in his hospital room worried about his health and pining for him. Bummer.

But, beyond the door he caught her voice.

“Yeah, they are. I mean I don’t know either of them all that well, but they’ve got solid reputations around the station.” She told Jones her opinion, “What I’ve seen, they’re both great officers.”

There’d been a silence as she must have been listening to her Sergeant. It was followed by an almost stunned, “I’m sorry. What?”

And Alex was so curious what that call was about. He’d hoped it was about him until that last line.
