CHAPTER 21

MACKENZIE AND JACK

JACK HEARD the scream while he was still on Broad Street. He had heard screams like that before from women and children and men. War was full of them. He quickened his step as he rounded the corner. The screaming was coming from inside the bar. He pushed on the glass door, but it didn’t budge.

He took a step back and tried to slow his mind. Had he just imagined the screaming and the yelling? Or was his sense of hearing off and it hadn’t come from this bar? But then he heard a man yell, “Woo-hoo. Let’s do this.”

He pushed on the door with his shoulder, but it was too heavy. He cupped his hands against the glass and tried to see inside. The shade blocked everything except a thin sliver of visibility at the very edge. In that sliver, Jack saw a small, black-booted foot that belonged to someone who was lying on the floor. He should call the police, but there was no time.

Jack spun around in a full circle, scanning his surroundings. A few feet away there was a sidewalk garbage can made of steel and river stones. He ran over to it and grabbed it with both hands. He lifted it over his head, took three giant steps toward the door, and threw the can at the glass. It hit hard and bounced back onto the pavement. It didn’t shatter the glass, but it did a lot of damage. A crack that looked like a spider with too many ridiculously long legs, sat just below the center of the glass. Jack ran at the door and kicked his heel into the center of that spider crack. Glass showered down into the bar and out onto the pavement. He pushed the shade aside and stepped inside.

Nearest him a woman was lying on the floor. Beside her was a man standing with his arms held-up in surrender. Farther in, atop the pool table, another man was on top of a woman.

Jack nearly left the man near the door alone. But he saw the look of terror on the woman’s face. She looked up at him as she lay on the floor, her mouth bloodied, her shirt pulled up over her breasts, her bra ripped in two.

The man struggled to get to his feet as he tried to pull his pants up and retreat toward the door. Jack turned away from the pool table and shot his right arm forward. He felt the man’s nose flatten against his fist. He swung his left arm around, and connected with the guy’s chin, sending him over onto his back with a hard thud, his arms spread over his head making the letter Y. He was out cold, his manhood pointing up at the ceiling.

Before Jack could get to the other guy at the pool table, something hit him across the shoulders. Out of the corner of his eyes, he saw half a pool stick windmill over the bar and smash a bottle of whiskey.
