When they arrived at the store, Ujaruk went in alone while Anders waited in the car. As he walked in, one of the regular checkers waved at him. "Where's your other boy?"

"He's hanging out in the car---the crutching's just too much today," Ujaruk said as he pulled a cart out of the nested row at the front. "But he'll probably be back with me next time."

"That's good. Tell him we said hi, will you?" the checker said before returning to the customer at her till.

"Sure thing," Ujaruk said as he headed into the store.

He was efficient; he knew the store very well, and finding the things he remembered needing wouldn't take long. The butcher helped him pick out a good steak and a plump chicken, the produce guy pointed out the ripest tomatoes and the crispest heads of lettuce, and the baker winked at him as she passed him the loaves of bread he'd ordered and two cupcakes that he hadn't. When he tried to protest, she said, "Nonsense. I love seeing the two of you together, and you always make my day brighten up. Sometimes you bicker like an old married couple, but the way he leans on your shoulder when he's wiped out from those crutches just shows me how much he means to you---and you to him. Take the cupcakes to him. It's my treat to you."

He felt good as he went through their favorite checker's line and paid for everything. He was almost whistling as he left the store with three bags of groceries in the cart and headed toward his car, where Anders waited.

"You all right?" he asked as he opened the backseat to set the groceries down. But when a choked sob answered him from the front seat, he dropped the groceries on the seat and scrambled to get in beside his lover. "Anders? What's wrong?"
