Charlie
“What was I thinking?” Charlie groaned. He pulled at his tie, hooking his finger into the collar to pull it away from his neck, then ran his hand over his hair.
He felt like his personality was being squeezed, pinched at the corners in order to fit into these nice clothes. It was only a dark button-down shirt, white pullover sweater, and dark navy slacks, but the polished belt and pinching shoes were too weird.
Charlie was going to spend the night on the arm of this guy he’d started off hating, and now he… hell, he was thinking of himself as Jace’s annoying nickname for him.
Charlie had been how the kids teased him, or Justin… fucking Justin. He had to get his brain off Justin. Jace was not Justin, nor would he ever be.
But people would think they were together. And were they? They’d stopped making fun of each other, except to lighten the mood. When they did, it was way more fun than being sweet and doting on each other. Hell, they were dancing around serious conversations together. And they’d fucked, more than once.
It was all leading them down a path he wasn’t sure he wanted to think about.
The knock on the door came at exactly seven, just as Jace had promised. Charlie bit back his smile. “Come in!” he shouted as he flicked off the bathroom light.
Jace pushed the front door open and stuck his head in the hallway. “Any half-naked men hanging around? Oh. It’s just you.”
“I told them to wait in the bedroom until later.” Charlie blew Jace a kiss as he grabbed his coat, then patted down his pockets.
Jace eyed him carefully and let the front door close, stepping into the front hall. Before he could pull Charlie in by the tie, Charlie held out a hand, then wagged a finger. “No touching the hair.”
“Got it.”
“Or wrinkling my pants.”
“Mmhmm.”
Charlie’s fingertip pressed against the broad barrel of Jace’s chest. The sleek, merino wool sweater he wore flattered the curves of his muscles perfectly. It distracted him from the other ultimatums he was preparing.
Jace took his chance to grab Charlie’s hand and yank him in by the wrist until he stumbled against the fireman’s chest. Then, Jace wrapped his arm around Charlie’s waist and pressed one slow, sweet kiss against his lips before tangling a hand thoroughly in his hair.
“Bastard,” Charlie complained in a mumble against those warm lips, but the heat and firm support of Jace’s body against his was much too good to turn down.
At last, a kiss. Easy as anything, casual, not made to be a big deal. Just the way he needed it. And Jace tasted sweet but smelled minty, fresh and bright-eyed and ready for the office party.
“Are you complaining?” Jace murmured, letting go of him and pulling back a few inches.
Charlie almost stumbled forward but grabbed Jace by the front of his sweater. “Don’t you fucking think about it. Kiss me again. Now.” When Jace smirked but didn’t move, he glared. “Kiss me, before I…”
“Make me?” Jace challenged, tilting his chin up slightly.
