Chapter 4

Max did not know how much time had passed.

More importantly, he did not care.

He remembered that one moment he had his head buried in Shadow's neck and the next he was sitting on the end of a bunch of tables that the group had thrown together to make one big table.

The dance floor was dark and silent, the bar unlit.

The lights over their table were the only ones on, the doors locked.

The rich scent of bacon and grilled hamburger wafted through the air.

Blaine had busted his ass making killer food, and Max felt his stomach roar, desperately needing the nutrients, the protein, but he couldn't bring himself to eat it, so it sat in front of him growing cold.

Everyone else, John included, ate ravenously. Every once in a while, Max noticed that someone would look his way, a worried look on their face, but he didn't care. It was really that simple. He felt like he was empty inside, a husk, hollowed out and left to drift in the wind.

Everything was numb.

He heard conversations, catching up, exchanging of information, but all of it sounded far away, nothing was in focus.

His eyes distant, Max simply sat there, leaned back in his chair, elbows on the armrests, tail hanging off to the side, still and unmoving, head down, staring at his bacon cheeseburger and fries that smelled terrific but that he couldn't bring himself to touch.

Ash had come down from his office not long after Max had come up from the shelter and had announced that he had told his employees to take the weekend off. He said that he had explained that there were having some issues at the club that would take a day or so to get through, and not to worry, that they would get overtime pay. As he passed, Ash had quietly clapped Max on the shoulder and gave it a squeeze, his way of letting Max know that he was glad that Max was okay.

None of it seemed to sink in.

Max could hear the bubbles fizzing in the soda that sat in the sweating glass but had no desire for it either.

To his right, Shadow sat on a bar stool, the apron now gone, munching happily on the burger Blaine had made for him. It was his third one, Max noticed and the big werewolf showed no signs of slowing down.

Shadow had trouble with drinking out of a glass at first and that had almost caused Max to almost smile. Brian had said something similar happened to him at first, but that smile died when Shadow looked over at him with a sloppy grin on his face, looking apologetic for the mess he made, and Max found he couldn't look Shadow in the eyes, especially with that grin.

Brian was haunting him.

It hurt too much and so Max had turned away silently. Shadow saw the hurt and his own dark furred expression turned down with a sad grin that faded fast.

A shadow fell over Max, and a thick body appeared between him and Shadow.
