Chapter Thirty-Seven

His heart hurt. His chest felt as if it had caved in. It was difficult to process all of it through the haze of knowing that she'd lied to him . . . for so long. It was difficult to trust and grab onto the things she said now.

Gabi . . . no Luisa . . . started carefully. He was mad at himself too, because he knew who she was the moment he’d first seen her, and he’d let her convince him he was wrong. But why?

“That night . . .” She took a deep breath. Her tongue darted out to lick her lips as if she were talking with her mouth and not her hands. Then stopped before she started and added, “Most of what I told you is true. Just reversed.”

Most wasn’t good enough. But she had to already know that. He was here for the truth, nothing more, so he stared at her until she started again.

“Gabi snuck out.”

That made more sense to him. The idea that Luisa had been sneaking out without him didn’t. Who would she have met? Why wouldn't she have told him?

“She took my favorite shirt.” He remembered that part of the story. “She was even wearing my jeans. Do you remember those wine colored ones I loved so much?”

He nodded. That made more sense, too. Gabi was far less concerned about her possessions, whereas Luisa believed that her things were hers and shouldn't be touched without permission. Luisa treated objects as if they were precious, Gabi always wondered why anyone even cared.

“She crawled in through the window, wearing all of my favorite things.”

He could see it on her face, even now—all the irritation of an eleven-year-old girl catching her cousin, basically her sister, having stolen her prized things.

“She caught her shirt—my favorite shirt—on that sharp edge on the window. She ripped it.”

The anger made sense, too. The Montalvo girls didn't have a lot. He knew they'd shopped at the local consignment and resale more often than not. Though they'd cost pennies or just a few dollars to get, Luisa's favorite things were not replaceable.

“She just washed her hair and didn’t care. I was so mad. I yelled. I started the fight.”

He almost asked her. Did you though? Hadn't Gabi started the fight by stealing her things? Then he reminded himself that he didn't trust Luisa and he wasn't really on her side. So he didn’t say anything.

“I was so mad that I pulled her things out of the closet and put her favorite shirt on. So when she got out she could see me ruin it. The problem was she didn't care, not like I did. It didn't matter when I ripped it. She would just get something different. She laughed and that made me even more angry.”

Devin stood there, barely breathing, unsure what to think and which parts of the story to trust. But he had to admit, knowing the Montalvo girls like he did, this version made more sense.
