* * *

The day had started out with such promise. I’d even dared to hope that things could go back to normal. I felt so stupid. This was my life we were talking about, after all, and if luck was a game of cards then I was always being dealt the jokers.

In other words, I should’ve known something would go wrong.

I felt off after the conversation with Sarah. It was fantastic to know that someone else in town would be able to interact with our ghosts, but she wasn’t here as a guest. She wasn’t here as a friend. She was here as a police officer, and she made that very clear. The evidence would be processed, and they would fit it into whatever theory of the crime they felt best fit the facts. Even if it ended up with me going to the prison cell next to Philippa.

George, wonderful man that he is, knew I needed to blow off some steam. He suggested I go out, and after only a few minutes of arguing with him I accepted that he was right. A girl’s night out. That’s what I needed. Something to prove to the world I was not going to just lie down and let my fiancé’s murder be hung round my neck. So I called up Sabrina and then Jessie and asked them to meet me at the Graham Pub, which was just on the other side of town. They both happily agreed, as they had nothing else going on, and said they would be there right away. I made sure to let them know it wasn’t an emergency or anything. I just needed company and good times and a cold beer.

When I arrived at the Pub there weren’t that many people there. During the day it had more of a restaurant feel, but at night it was dark and intimate and despite the booths along the perimeter, the pool tables in the middle were usually the most occupied. I easily got a quiet booth away from the action and waited for the girls to show up. I couldn’t help but think about how many years I’d lived with Philippa, and how much “girl talk” we’d had with each other that had just ended up being a sham. Had she ever really cared about me at all? How could someone pretend to care for so many years when they were secretly harboring resentment so strong they would eventually try to murder you?

Before I could get too deep into my thoughts the girls showed up. We ordered drinks, wine for Sabrina and beers for me and Jessie. “I need it after this day, this week!” I declared, as if I needed to explain myself to them.

“I completely understand.” Sabrina placed her hand on mine and gave me a small smile.

“No judgement here!” Jessie said, smiling as the tray of our drinks arrived.

I told them what had happened today, with the note and then the discovery of the trophy. I left out the details about the ghost’s involvement, but it wasn’t really necessary.
