Mrs. Clark at the Blue Wave Motel was sad when Jason moved out the week before Christmas. But news of his new venture had reached her ears, and although heâd bought a hotel, he wouldnât be competing with her. Hopefully, the vagrants who dug through her dumpster and slept under the balcony awnings would find a new home with Jason Harrison.
It only took one carload to empty his efficiency apartment and move into the hotel on closing day. Emilyâs friend the realtor told him she was concerned.
âJason, you donât have an occupancy permit. You might get into trouble if they discover youâre staying here.â
But he ignored her. There was one room and bathroom on the ground floor that the former contractor had set up as an on-site respite room for the architect and supervisor to use. After dark, Jason brought in a folding card table and chairs and a twin bedframe and mattress. He had a small dorm refrigerator and a microwave, a coffee maker, and a single-burner cooktop.
âThis is not what I had in mind,â Emily said, frowning. âWhy donât you just rent a room from me? I promise I wonât jump you in the night.â
Jason laughed, but he knew his actions had hit a nerve. After years of whoring around, he was done. He admired Emily, he cared for her as a friend, he desired her, but there he was drawing a line. He wasnât going to bed her like he had the others, because if there was going to be anything between them, it had to transcend lust.
âI want to be here so I can get a feel for the place. I canât really explain it.â
âI know what you mean,â she said excitedly. âSometimes when I have a vision, it changes once reality hits. Iâm already wondering if efficiency apartments are a smart move here. All of those burners in use, all that garbage. We might be asking for bugs and fire.â
âWhat about induction cooktops?â he asked.
âThat wonât eliminate the possibility of bugs.â
âWe can do inspections. I donât think Iâll get the city to give me an occupancy permit if there isnât some kind of food-preparation space in each unit.â
âWhat if we do a main kitchen and dining room?â Emily asked.
âYouâre determined,â he said, pulling on his beard.
âNot really. It will be cheaper if we do one common meal preparation and dining space.â
âThe problem with that is it wonât instill independence in the tenants,â Jason countered.
âHa! Youâve been reading the articles I sent you,â she said, pleased. âOkay, letâs think about it. Weâd really have to stay on top of trash collection because once a place gets bugs, itâs almost impossible to get rid of them.â
Shivering with distaste at the thought, Emily giggled. âIâm like a maniac in the bungalows. Iâm in there daily, looking in rooms. They know itâs part of the price of having a roof over their heads. In a place like this where you might have a hundred people living, it could get out of control.
