J EFF RICHARDSON, NATURAL Light Foodsâ CEO, laughed. Directly in Loriahâs face.
âDr. Harp. Please. Speak reasonably, now.â
âJeffââ
âNo, no. Thereâs no way weâre pulling our number one seller, which, might I remind you, has made the company and YOU PERSONALLY millions of dollars, from the shelves just because one sick mouse died and a few others have a little rash. Are you crazy?â
Steve piped up from his seat next to Loriah. âMr. Richardson, itâs true that only one mouse died, but the others donât have just a little rash. Theyâre all bleeding from the nose, eyes, mouth, anusââ
Jeff waved a hand dismissively. âSo, we got a bad batch of mice.â
Steveâs faced darkened. âThe experimental mice were from the same breeder as the control mice, and that group is entirely healthy.â
âSo? Even if thatâs true, and Iâm not saying it is, then that doesnât mean humans will be affected just because mice are. As you both well know, humans and mice are very different.â
Loriah cringed at Jeffâs patronizing tone. âJeff. It isnât just the mice. You know very well that my son has been hospitalized for over a week now with the same symptoms as the mice.â
Jeffâs face softenedâbut only slightly. His tone was gentler as he said, âLoriah. You know Iâm very sorry about your son. But the boy may just have an allergy! Who knows what we put into our bodies these days?â
Loriah exploded. âWE do. WE are the ones who know what we put into our bodies! WE fucking make the shit! My son, just like so many other people, has been eating Natural Light Mayo like itâs water and heâs dying of thirst. Thatâs not a fucking coincidence .â
âLoriah,â Jeff growled, all gentleness evaporated. âWatch your language. There is nothing wrong with our mayonnaise.â
âMr. Richardson, have you not searched the web recently?â Steve asked. âThere are more and more chat forums and articles talking about the âmysterious allergyâ popping up all over the country. People are starting to make the connection. Theyâre starting to ask questions.â
âI donât fucking care!â Jeff roared. âMaybe they should think about making better choices and losing weight if they really care about their health!â
âJeff. You have kids. Think about the parents feeding this to their families!â Loriah said.
Jeff laughed again, the sound fierce like a gunshot. âAre you serious, Loriah? I would never eat this myself, much less feed this shit to my kids.â
âJEFF. I feed this to MY family. How can you sell a product you wonât eat yourself?â
âI can do it because it makes a shit ton of money! Wake up, Loriah! This is the real fucking world. Letâs look at the facts. Weâre not getting any shit from the FDA. There arenât any Wall Street Journal or New York Fucking Times articles calling us out. No inspectors or reporters or even Susie fucking Homemakers are sniffing around, so who cares if a few internet trolls are whining from their momâs basements? All of this means: weâre A-OKAY.â
âBut this poison mayo could be killing children .
