Chapter 15

After some quiet time, reading a book, checking my email, and answering Jamie’s endless questions, I showered, changed into clean clothes that Skye had lent me, and then made my way back to the main fire where everyone gathered.

I still felt as if I were camping at some elaborate resort with a charming rustic flair. I thought my parents’ cabin in Tahuya was roughing it. Khalen did have electricity available and an internet connection, which I thought was odd, so things weren’t too bad. There was not a TV in sight, but I certainly didn’t miss it. There was so much going on around camp, that the days flew by in a blink.

Avel stood and greeted me with a smile and a bright red glass of wine.

“I believe I have grown to love these people,” he said.

“So now I know; endless wine and food is what it takes to earn your heart.”

“Not to mention useful gifts, unbound intelligence, a sense of community, and phenomenal accommodations.”

Khalen approached us with his arm draped around Skye. His other hand held a glass of wine. She held her youngest, Zhentu. His steel-blue eyes would rob some woman’s heart someday, I was sure.

Khalen focused on Avel. “Aidan and the others will touch down at Arcadie’s place in eight hours,” he said.

“Arcadie’s place?” I questioned.

“He has his own airfield,” Skye explained. “He has a magnificent home. We’ll have to show it to you some day.”

I laughed. “Me go to Brazil? Yeah, right.”

Skye frowned. “Why not?” Then her mind shifted gears as if a sudden thought flashed through her. “Khalen, have you thought to ask Tetris about Vincent’s father?”

Khalen looked confused for a moment, then brightened with revelation. “Of course!” He kissed her full on the mouth, then stepped away. “You’re brilliant,” he said, rushing off toward Case’s yurt.

Avel and I must have resembled two cartoon characters who had just been slammed with an iron pan. Skye smiled, her silver eyes sparkling with amusement.

“Tetris is in charge of the camp in England in Case’s absence.”

Our confusion didn’t dissipate one iota.

“He’s a wizard—a third-generation wizard.”

I pursed my lips.

Skye exhaled, clearly exasperated by our lack of knowledge. Spirians are very impatient, I noticed.

“A wizard is a Protected form of Spirian—the good guys,” she clarified. “The Shadow side of a wizard, or bad guy, is called a necromancer. They hold a very tight circle and not much goes unnoticed by one or the other.”

“So,” I started, hoping to clear my confusion, “a wizard would most likely know about the son of a necromancer?”

Skye’s smile brightened. “Exactly.”

“Clear as mud,” Avel groaned.

I jostled him. “Don’t worry about it. This Tetris guy may have some answers for us. That’s all you need to know.”

“Right,” he said, taking a long pull from his wine.

“I need to get this young man cleaned up,” said Skye. “I’ll see you two later.”
