Chapter Twenty-seven

“Bodyguard now! Guns on stun.” Forge swept me up in his arms, and carried me further away from the path into the deserted party area, with my bodyguards clustering protectively around us, and the rest of our group trailing behind.

When Forge reached the centre of the dancing lawn, he put me down. “Buzz, carry out a roll call while I ...”

Forge broke off his words, and gave an angry shake of his head. “No! Buzz is still standing by the path. She must be the one in trouble. Strike team, form a defensive perimeter here. I’ll go back and get Buzz myself.”

I turned to look for Buzz, but my bodyguards had already formed a protective wall around me that blocked my view. I wanted to search for Buzz telepathically, but knew I mustn’t risk messing up our counselling relationship by reading her mind. I waited impatiently until I heard Forge’s voice again.

“I found Buzz staring at the people in Event Coordination uniforms, who were pushing trolleys along the path,” he said breathlessly. “I think she was frightened by the blond-haired man with the trolley of orange crates. When Buzz was four years old, she witnessed a blond man kill a woman in a park near her home in Turquoise Zone. The man with the orange crates must look like the murderer.”

“That man doesn’t look like the murderer.” Buzz’s voice sounded higher pitched than usual. “He is the murderer.”

I instinctively closed my eyes, and reached out with my telepathic sense to find the people pushing trolleys, but none of their minds had the distinctive look of a wild bee.

“Amber’s regular four bodyguards stay with her,” snapped Forge. “The rest of us will go for the strike on Lucas’s order.”

“Are you sure this is the same man, Buzz?” asked Lucas. “You were only four years old when you witnessed that murder, so your memories of it must be hazy.”

“I was only four years old back then,” said Buzz savagely, “but it was a life-threatening situation that triggered my borderline telepath skills. When I saw the blond man arguing with the woman, I had my first ever insight, and it was into the mind of a man about to commit murder.”

Her voice filled with emotion as she relived that moment. “I started running before the blond man actually killed the woman. I found a hiding place, but the man knew I’d seen him. He kept searching for me for what seemed like hours, and I had another insight into how he was going to wring my neck like a rabbit. Fortunately for me, someone had found the woman’s body by then and called for help. What I eventually learned was Morton’s Strike team arrived and ...”

She broke off her sentence, and took a moment to recover before speaking again. “I will never forget a single detail of what happened, or the smile of anticipation on the blond man’s face as he decided to commit murder. The moment I came out of Lottery, I used my new Law Enforcement authority to look up all the records of the case.
