A good exercise to help get the horse more forward and rhythmic in the trot and to improve suppleness and obedience is to ride a figure eight of 2 twenty-meter circles. Place four ground poles or X-style cavalletti on the first circle in a curved row, about 4 1/2 feet apart. Trot through the poles on one rein, complete the circle, then change rein and ride the second twenty-meter circle to create the figure eight. You can increase the difficulty by picking up a canter as you enter the second circle and then coming back to the trot just before you ride through.

To create a more forward horse, place five to seven cavalletti or ground poles in a series about 4 1/2 to 5 feet apart. Trot over the poles, and pick up a canter immediately after exiting. This exercise also teaches the rider how to prepare transitions and keep the horse on the aids.

To teach a horse to lengthen stride, place five cavalletti or ground poles 5 1/2 feet apart. Trot through and encourage your horse to take a bigger stride by driving more with your leg. After exiting the grid, make a ten-meter circle in collected sitting trot. Enlarge the circle to twenty meters, then lengthen stride through the grid again.

Canter cavalletti for dressage horses has little benefit because the desired canter in dressage is a canter that moves in an uphill manner. Canter cavalletti often encourages the horse to lengthen and drop her forehand instead of raise it.
