“This meeting is very important,” Adrik warned, looming over Taylor as he spoke. “You can’t mess this one up.”

She narrowed her eyes at him, resentful of his insinuation that she was a fuck-up. “Just what do you think I’m going to do?”

His jaw hardened, and his eyes took on the look of glittering obsidian. “Considering all the other tricks you’ve already pulled, there’s no telling. But you’ve got to understand, Taylor, that I’m not just dealing with my mother or some dumbass detective. My stepfather is a force to be reckoned with, even for the most hardened of men. You can’t step up and get defensive because you don’t like something you overhear.”

“Seems to me like it would be much easier not to have me in there at all, then.” Taylor turned away from him and back toward the stove. She felt as though she’d been doing nothing but cooking since she arrived. Killian didn’t seem to mind, since he always got a few scraps here and there, but she didn’t think there would be so much need for food with only two people in the house. Adrik, however, seemed to go a little easier on her when he was getting homecooked meals, and Taylor didn’t mind spending some time over the stove if it meant things would go more smoothly. Still, she was starting to feel like a slave, and she resented him for it. Telling her to cater to this little meeting with his stepfather was just another straw on the heap Adrik had been building.

Adrik sighed and leaned against the counter. “Sure, if Sergei didn’t already know that you and I are getting married. Then I could just take him out to a restaurant. Hell, I could even hire someone to come in here and do this for me. But he’ll want to see what my bride-to-be is made of. He’ll be watching you very closely, and he’ll want to see that you’re made of the right stuff to be part of this family.”

Taylor wasn’t sure how she felt about that. If Sergei didn’t like her, then maybe he would forbid Adrik from marrying her. Of course, there was no telling what happened to a woman who wasn’t good enough for the Sokolovs. Sergei would probably just want to have her killed, and then she’d be back at square one. That wasn’t a place she wanted to be.

“I don’t like that look in your eye,” he warned. “I’m not joking around about this, Taylor.”

Damn it. Adrik could read her like a book. She wanted to fight him tooth and nail, but she relented. “Fine. I’ll behave. But tell me what the hell I’m even expected to do. If you’re meeting with your father and his right-hand man, then I hardly think it’s the place for a woman.” She was using his logic against him, and she knew it. Adrik was definitely the kind of guy who thought a man should be the leader no matter what the situation, and women were only around to make sure the men were taken care of.
