CASE STUDY 9.1 TONY’S RECORD
In a ward round, Tony said, ‘My criminal record is very long- and that tells its own story.’
COMMENT
In narrative terms, Tony was using language condensation. He does not feel the need to explain his criminal history, as ‘it tells its own story’. Perhaps the audience, in this context, the doctors, nurses, etc., are meant to understand something like, ‘I don’t need to elaborate that here.’ Depending on tone and emphasis, the same statement to a counsellor might be heard as a cry for help (e.g. this man has been through a great deal, has seen and caused trouble, and might elicit the response, ‘Why don’t you tell me some more about that?’), while the same statement to his peers, might have an entirely different connotation, for example, ‘stay clear of me’. His phrase could imply a status (e.g. ‘hard man’), with his implied personal story resonating with cultural plots suggestive of toughness, street credibility, and so on.
