Chapter 62

When I explain the mission plan for the next four weeks, Aria surprises me with her response. “I want to go to the dojo too. I am completely incapable of defending myself.”

I firmly shake my head. “No. Your body needs a lot of work. Stay focused on that and your life Magica and we’ll revisit it after a few months. Plus, you are going to need to rest after our Magica practice. Part of it entails emptying you out. We are going to stretch your mana channels and they need to rest and recover afterwards, just like you. Stay on mission, prove you can improve yourself the right way, and we’ll talk about combat training. I will also be changing our food intake to increase proteins so our bodies will build muscle more efficiently.”

She visibly deflates which makes me feel terrible. I sit next to her and put my arm around her shoulders. “Look Aria. You are vulnerable. If you want to participate in future missions with real danger, you need to get stronger. Much much stronger, both physically and Magically. If you want to help, you have to do it the right way, in the right order.” She nods but I can tell she isn’t happy about it. Well tough.

[Jo, see if you can get a meeting with Mr. Whyatt around the end of the week.]

Over the next week we follow the mission plan to the letter. Aria is really pushing herself and wants to improve, probably so she can get into the next phases of training. She’ll understand the pace soon enough. And as expected she is exhausted after Magica practice. As for me, I am getting back into form in the dojo and can hold my own with trainers 2, 3 and 4. Trainer 1 kicks my ass with ease. The point is that I am improving.

On the advancement front, we have had some success researching affinities. Because I am a freak, I have three ways to activate affinities: 1. Direct mana injection, 2. Mana Stone, or 3. Figuring it out myself. Direct mana injection is out because it would expose me. That leaves Mana Stones and my own clueless poking.

The problem with Mana Stones is that I will likely need at least 2,000 essence based on the experience with death affinity. That is hard to come by because mana stones leak incessantly unless in a specialized temporal container which are prohibitively expensive. That means I would have to get them myself. Where am I going to find Light, Darkness, Ice and Magma beasts to kill? Regarding the final option, Jo and I agree opening an affinity myself requires that I be at or near the element to understand its emotional requirements. There aren’t exactly any volcanoes in Sea Saddle City and a bucket of ice is obviously not going to cut it. Either way, I have to be sure before I leave Aria alone while I go traipsing around. She really is pretty much defenseless.
