A note of caution: Don’t let the same name end up on more than one coach’s list of people to ask. You don’t want anyone being contacted by multiple staff to lead in different areas. For example, if someone who has led a general group in the past is now involved on the vocal team, both the worship arts pastor and the general group coach may want to ask that person to lead a group. During your focus meeting, figure out who is going to ask that person to lead to ensure that they don’t get two separate phone calls.
Another reason to talk through your potential leader list person by person is to protect your best leaders. This process allows you to identify those people who never take a break from leading. Leaders need a semester off. They need to be released from leadership service in order to stay effective in the future. We recommend that group leaders serve two semesters a year and then just participate in a group the third semester. But even when you make the “two on and one off” goal clear to your leaders, you will still have some who sign up to lead every semester. Don’t let them. You may be tempted to let this slide—especially if you need leaders—but keep the bigger picture in mind. You don’t want to burn out your best leaders.
There are two more things to do before you move ahead. First, combine all of your coach/staff lists into one master list. Finalize all edits and additions to the list. You will give this master list back to your coaches and team leaders during the form month so that they can begin making calls and asking people to lead. Second, pray for every person on the master list. You will be asking these people to serve as shepherds in your church. Ask God to prepare their hearts for the task that he may be calling them to.
