Chapter Thirteen

Leah had always been greatly amused that just about every one of Gloria’s best stories undoubtedly began with her saying, “So, I’m having a glass of wine, when all of a sudden ...”

Leah was reminded of this as she sat across the table from her old friend in Jimmy’s bar, across the street from the theater. Gloria, of course, already had a glass of wine in her hand. It was her second. She scanned the large room thoughtfully while she sipped.

“I’m dying to know what the police are asking Claudia Moffatt,” she finally said. “If only we could be a fly on that wall.”

Leah nodded in agreement as she wiped a smudge from the rim of her own wine glass. And then a thought occurred to her. She set down the glass and began to dig through her purse.

“I think I might have access to that fly,” she began. “I mean, I know someone. Maybe he can tell us more.”

It took a bit more digging–her purse was definitely in need of a purging–but Leah finally found what she’d been looking for: the business card given to her by Detective Mark Albertson. She held up the card to Gloria.

“This is the detective who interviewed me about finding Hatchet’s body,” she said as Gloria took the card from her. “The second detective, that is. He seemed very approachable and nice, much more so than the first detective I talked with.”

Gloria studied the card carefully. “So, you could just call him?” she asked, a strong hint of skepticism in her voice. “And he’ll, like, tell you stuff?”

Leah shrugged. “It can’t hurt to ask,” she said. “Plus, I sort of got the sense that he liked me. Sort of. Maybe. I don’t know.”

“Nice,” Gloria said with a wicked grin. “Well, if you can get answers from him on what the police think they have on Claudia, that would be fantastic.” She took another long sip of her wine. “After that, you’ll have to ask him to turn his deductive powers to help figure out why Dylan has shown up out of the blue.”

Leah had briefly forgotten about the sudden and surprising appearance of her ex-boyfriend. She shuddered involuntarily as she flashed back to seeing him in the front row during the show.

“I can’t believe I just looked down and saw him there,” she said, shaking her head at the memory. “I’m amazed I was able to go on.”

“Hey, by the way, great job tonight,” Gloria said, leaning forward to clink glasses with her friend. “With all the hullaballoo, I haven’t had the chance to properly congratulate you on what was, without question, one hell of an achievement.”

They clinked their respective glasses and Gloria smiled at Leah. “I got the sense that you wanted to kill me in that Board meeting this morning,” she said with a wide grin. “When I offered you up as our home-grown Aunt Abby understudy.”

“What makes you think I still don’t want to kill you?” Leah said as she turned on her best Cheshire Cat smile.
