Then, she walked away.

To sulk.

Outside, Jagger reached her, and she was checking out the Hummer. It was, indeed, Luke’s. Only, it had some major repairs and modifications made to it.

He let her work through it, saying goodbye in her head. Jagger knew what she was doing.

Maura was reliving it.

Jagger said nothing, as she climbed into the ride and closed the driver-side door. He watched as she rested her forehead on the steering wheel as the pain overwhelmed her.

When she looked over, there were tears running down her cheeks.

Jagger didn’t move.

He knew her well enough. Maura didn’t like a pity party. She didn’t like someone interrupting her mourning.

Instead of doing either of those two things, he took a different route. Jagger lifted his arms and made a heart with his fingers. He held it there, as if offering it to her.

Her heart was broken in that moment, but he’d repair it with the one that he could give her.

She stared at his hands and took the next minute to figure out her next step.

Then, she made the heart back to him.

Why was is so significant?

Luke did that to her all of the time, and now, Jagger was filling in for his friend, her husband. It touched her heart on a very deep level.

His actions didn’t make her sadder. It actually did the opposite.

Maura smiled.

Then, she nodded and motioned for him to join her.

Jagger didn’t hesitate.

He hopped into the passenger seat and checked out everything in the upgraded vehicle.

It was the same ride, but cooler. The tech was tricked out.

“Oh, someone got an upgrade.”

She laughed, wiping her eyes on her sleeve.

“I’m such a girl. I feel like an idiot for letting this nearly take me to my knees.”

He stopped her.

“You are allowed to feel. You are allowed to mourn, and you can be soft when you need to be, Mar. I’ll keep you safe when you need to hurt.”

Yeah, she was seeing that.

Maura leaned over, and she placed her lips against his in a soft kiss. Hers moved warmly over his, sending chills through his body.

When she pulled away, he blinked.

“I also yelled at Sarah for you. Kiss me again.”

It made her laugh.

“Did she cry?” she asked.

“No.”

“Next time try harder,” she offered.

Jagger would.

To kiss her, he’d do just about anything to heal her heart, and his, in the process.

“Fire her up. Let’s see what they did to her,” Jagger said, trying not to think about how she made his body go molten.

They had work to do.

Maura put the key in the ignition and turned it over. The navigational screen turned on, and then it began dialing someone.

“Uh what the hell?” she asked. “I’m not dialing anyone!” she said, digging for her phone in her pocket.

Only, it was too late.

The call went through.

Elizabeth’s face appeared on the screen.

“Major Mars, welcome to your ride,” she stated. “I’m sorry that you were surprised with it. I was going to tell you yesterday, but you looked like hell. I figured one more shock, and you were going to lose your shit all over me.
