Learning Differences
For students who have serious learning disabilities, it is advisable to use the supplemental essay to write a short learning statement. This allows students a forum to express the nature of the disablility, how they have compensated for it, and how it affects their learning. Colleges will not use this information against a student so long as there is no evidence in the transcript, the teacher recommendations, or the written material of major academic struggles. In other words, unless the college is concerned that you will not be able to handle the level of academic rigor (and that concern cannot come only from your essay—they are not allowed to discriminate), there is no reason not to take the time to explain your learning differences. The most appropriate title is “Statement of Learning Differences.” Let’s read an actual example from a student who was accepted to all of his top-choice colleges.
