Chapter 14

Nathan held out his hand out to help me rise. Once I stood he suddenly frowned and narrowed his eyes darkly. I grew afraid of his apparent anger. The demon that had mastered his senses made him unpredictable and dangerous. But I was to find relief that his temper was not centred upon me when he swung around away from me in one sharp movement to search the forest with his eyes.

His voice was imbued with bitterness and a fierceness that made me shrink from him when he spoke.

“She is watching us. I can feel it.”

“Drusilla?” I questioned. “But she cannot read our minds.”

He turned back to me. He appeared impatient with my lack of understanding.

“The witch is cunning. She sees everything. She sees pictures like those taken by a camera, only they are vibrant in colour and they move. Do not doubt me. She has shown me.”

He turned again, unsheathing his sword to point it threateningly into the air towards an invisible ethereal being.

“I know you watch us, Witch,” he shouted into the air. “You should have learned that you cannot control me. I do not exist to serve you. I will not be tamed,” he moved forward and then to the side in an agitated manner. “You thought you could keep my Queen from me, force me to destroy what was mine to keep for all time. You are a pretender to the throne of Talus. It is time you were removed and Juliet was crowned.”

His speech was animated, passionate. I was warmed with love at the return of his loyalty to me yet chilled by the venom and anger he felt towards Drusilla. He seemed determined to taunt the witch and provoke her into action. I feared we would be ill prepared for it. But I dared not question his method.

“My loyalty and my love belong to my Queen however much you or I try to fight it. The bond cannot be broken. Your reign is at and end, Witch and now I bring your death.”

An angry female cry of pure rage erupted and echoed around the forest. The birds scattered and flew away. A sharp icy wind blew whipping up the snow around us as the sky clouded with grey. Nathan gave a deep sarcastic laugh of triumph. “She comes.”

To my shame I felt myself retreating pulling what was left of my velvet coat around me, suddenly feeling the icy tinge of fear upon my skin. I was not ready to face Drusilla. Fractured images of our last meeting tormented my mind. I was weak, unable to defend myself. How could Nathan do this to me? I felt my brow furrow into an angry frown at his back. We would die for sure this time. I determined to leave to gain strength to fight another day as I had planned. But Nathan was to forbid my departure.

He reached behind him to grasp my arm the moment I attempted to leave as though he had anticipated my action.
