CHAPTER 20

Ace

"What the hell, Ace? Why didn't you let me ask about Quinn?" Jackie asked, her skirt backward from the long car ride.

I backed away, leaning against the opposite wall as the elevator rose into the air. "Look, I know you're eager to find your sister, but we need to do this carefully. We don't know who we can trust yet, and the last thing we need is for us to broadcast our agenda here."

Jackie crossed her arms. "He seemed nice."

I felt my heat flare involuntarily as I crossed the elevator and glared down at her. "I don't like him."

She put her hands on her hips. "Really? Because you're starting to sound a little jealous."

"Just playing the part, dear."

The bell rang, and I swiped my wrist over the buttons, prompting them to glow green. "Welcome back, Ace," a voice greeted us as the doors opened.

I took a handful of Jackie's butt and shoved her into my apartment, then followed her in and tossed her duffle bag to the side.

"You asshole," she said, but her anger didn’t reach her voice.

She looked stunned as she wandered into the living room. The light from the second-story chandelier caught her curls. The multi-level glass gave us a full view of the city, but I thought it looked better with her propped next to the view. She walked to the window, putting her hand on the glass, silently staring out as the last of the city lights turned on.

She'd had that same sad look on her face since she’d seen the wall.

I walked up behind her and put my hand on the glass beside hers, doing the only thing with clothes on that I was decent at–I lied, whispering into her hair, "We're going to find her."

She turned to me, her brave façade slipping back into place. "I've never been to a movie theater before. Can we go?"

I wondered when I’d stop being surprised by her odd thought process. I wasn’t sure if my initial guess about her worrying we’d never find her sister was correct, or maybe she was thinking about Hades coming to claim her soul. I didn’t blame her for not confiding those fears in me. You could only hear ‘I told you so’ so many times. The movie theater wasn't on the list of social events we had to attend, but she clearly needed a win.

“Let’s rest tonight. Then tomorrow, we debut you to divine society. I’ll take you to the movies Sunday night.”

“Promise?”

“By Orisha, I promise to take you to the movies this Sunday,” I said, holding my hand out.

She shook it, and I stifled an urgent and painful urge to kiss her by turning away. I knew better than to catch feelings for Jackie. My body was simply reacting to my usual routine. Bring a beautiful goddess back to my place, sleep with her, and then kick her out. Without that routine in place, I didn't know what the hell to do.

"Woooo!" Jackie yelled, and I turned to see her flashing her boobs at the window.
