Fountain Park, Franklin

4 P. M.

Cody was sitting on a park bench near where Matt had crashed and, as he looked at the tire tracks across the grass and the damaged bushes, the irony of what he had to do was not lost on him. He started to dial his cell phone for the fourth time in the last two hours, hesitated, and then put it back in his pocket. Damn it, this is not good. I really don’t want to make this call, but not calling isn’t an option. Finally he pulled the phone from his pocket and made the call.

After several rings, he heard a recorded voice say, “Hi, this is Matt Riley. You know the drill,” followed by a tone.

“Matt, this is Cody. You know the number. We have to talk . . . it’s important. Call me.” Cody ended the call and started to walk towards Liberty Street. That’s just great. I don’t even know if Matt is back on his feet again. Now what do I do? I don’t trust any of the other cops, and the DA made it real clear that he doesn’t want any part of me.

As Cody considered his options his phone rang, startling him. He looked at the caller ID, and was relieved when he saw the number. “Matt, thanks for calling back. I was afraid that you were still laid up.”

“Nah, the phone was just in another room and I couldn’t get to it before it rolled over to voice mail. So, what’s up?”

“I heard some things that you ought to know about. It’s not much, but maybe it’s a start.”

“OK,” Matt said evenly, “Tell me what you have.”

“Well, I just met the guy who claims that he’s now running heroin distribution in Franklin. I’m not sure if he was blowing smoke up my ass, but what he said was that people in Pittsburgh are calling the shots and they decided to clean house here. Anyway, he sounded like the real deal to me.”

“Cody, I’m having a hard time believing that you just happened to run into someone like that. Besides, you’re supposed to be doing what we tell you, not free-lancing. You’d better explain what happened.”

“It’s a long story, but the short version is that I asked an old friend to see about making some connections, and he set up a meet at the mall with a guy named Nick. I’ve never heard of him, but he seems like a serious dude.”

“What do you mean serious?”

“I guess you had to be there to understand. Have you ever met someone that you just knew he was dangerous the minute you laid eyes on them? The sort of guy you just don’t want to mess with?”

Matt laughed, “Oh, yeah. When I was in the Marines there were a few guys that I could tell just from looking at them were walking death.”

“Exactly. Well, Nick is one of those guys. He kinda confirmed my suspicions when he didn’t like something I said and knocked me flat on my ass.
