Ordering a data set

An essential first step when working with a numerical data set is to order that set — that is, arrange its values in order from lowest to highest. Here is the ordered data set from Professor Keller’s exam:

75, 77, 84, 84, 87, 92, 93

For the remainder of this example, I refer only to the ordered version of this data set.

Minimum and maximum

The minimum (min) and maximum (max) of a data set are the lowest and highest values in that set, respectively. When working with an ordered data set, the min is the first value in the set, and the max is the last value.

So the min and max for the exam grades are 75 and 93, respectively.
