The Siren

Her voice sang in their minds, luxurious, lilting, and altering for each species to trigger their brains’ pleasure centers:

“I am your victory, your greatest ally, your dreams made real, your nightmares harnessed.”

She altered her image as well, to suit them. To Derry, she was voluptuous, dark-haired, violet-eyed, and tall, with long legs…just as she had been in her days as a full human, years ago. He was her servant, though he did not realize it. He commanded his own troops of beings now, for Valemog.

And though she enjoyed her role in flaying the thoughts of those she tortured along the fringes of the Event, she sought for more. Paosh Tohon indulged her hunger, for they were one and the same, and through her, it flourished. She was its most adaptable manifestation. Yet she wanted something she did not have. One final prize remained, and then nothing would stand in the way of domination.

That prize was not the keeper of the diamethysts, whom she loathed and feared, but ultimately could not use to her end: it was Ariel Brant. And as long as Galla protected Ariel, Veronica could not have her.

Whispers flew in the wake of the mage governor’s ship. And through space and its many networks, she called, for she was the siren of Paosh Tohon.
