CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
Artorian watched the show, his smile slowly fading. Kneading at his forehead, he picked his metal legs up one at a time to lay down properly on the makeshift hay-bale bed, tucking his charcoal and currant robes in around them afterwards. âSometimes I envy those who are on the Power Gathering track. This Tribulation business is so uncomfortable a thought in comparison. Completing it might be out of my reach.â
Chandra formed a thin, fresh blanket of interlocked vines to serve as a new duvet cover. Artorian gladly pulled it close, not even surprised that it was soft as cloth. Brianna and Chandra nodded slowly, deep understanding plain on the A-rankersâ faces as they thoroughly understood his current growing pains. âYou remind me of a work by Traviticus of Baldree.â
Artorian laced his hands, his attention on Chandraâs words. âPlease, do share?â
The Nature Mage scrunched up her face to recall the wording. It had been ages since sheâd seen the performance. âI believe he was orating on the topic of comfort versus success? He was in the process of referring to âa deeply uncertain feeling you get, when you know youâre not doing things the way noteworthy or successful people are doing it.â Contrasted by the sudden knowledge that if âyour efforts are actually working,â then to âjust remember that thatâs what having a competitive advantage feels like.â He goes long in depth to describe that success in the face of what should be insurmountable âusually doesnât feel comfortable, because it is, by nature, uncommon.â He finished his soapbox speech with the confirmation that âthis is a good signâunless what youâre doing isnât working, in which case, you know, um, itâs the other thing.â He trailed off after that. Possibly distracted by a distant dais while reaching for his knife, the need for murder glinting in his eyes.â
Artorian cocked his head as he tried to think of how an old speech could apply to his situation. A piece of general advice was never a direct measuring stick for oneâs issues, for no such advice could work in each instance of differing specifics.
Still, he didnât dislike Chandraâs recounting of the scroll. âI believe it means that even if my path is difficult, because I am seeing success, I should not be concerned about the discomfort that comes from comparing myself to others. For there are no others I can compare myself to in order to understand where my median, and thus my measurement of comfort comparative to my success, actually lies.â
He chewed on his cheek. âSadly, that doesnât mean I donât feel the discomfort, success on my track or not. Having a competitive advantage does feel nice? Being able to refill my Mana in a snap is a terribly powerful wildcard, regardless of the cost.â
Brianna commiserated with the old man. âIn my opinion⦠the Tribulation track is uncomfortable in practice, particularly compared to the other two tracks. I feel that one possesses the most unique and unpleasant of drawbacks. The Power Gathering track is very straightforward.
