Chapter Nine

But Mariah wasn’t ready to go inside with Lady Morley just yet and she hung back in the garden, waiting until the older woman was out of sight. She realized now that her approach to solving this mystery had not been the most methodical. She would correct that immediately by doing what she ought to have done before rushing off to question Anne Pettifor this morning: Examine the scene of the murder.

She went around to the little summer house at the edge of the garden. There was something chilling about returning to this place, even under the broad light of day. All signs of the previous night’s grisly occurrence had been thoroughly cleaned away, most likely by some unfortunate manservant. Nonetheless, Mariah found herself stepping gingerly around the spot where the body had lain, much as she might have avoided treading over a new grave.

Uncertain what she was looking for, she nonetheless searched within the summer house, under the near garden benches, and even beneath the hedges. She found nothing to give a clue as to the identity of the killer. All she did discover were a few stray threads of fabric, caught upon the thorns of a rosebush behind the summerhouse. But those might have been torn from anyone’s clothing at any time. It was impossible to discern even if they had belonged to a man or a woman.

Why must this investigation be so frustrating, she wondered. Would it have been too much to ask that the murderer drop his cap or lose a shoe buckle? A lost handkerchief perhaps with a tidy set of initials?

A soft rain began to fall and she picked up her skirts and hurried indoors, thinking as she did so that she had no choice but to move on to the next task on her mental list, though it wasn’t an undertaking she looked forward to.
