Chapter Seventeen

One Secret at a Time

Cai and I have lunch again the next day, and I hate how normal life with Fin is starting to feel. Is this what it’s like to have a continuous glucose monitor and always be able to know your blood sugar? Probably not—I don’t think those talk to you, and they definitely can’t give the entire cafeteria hiccups. They almost had to cancel classes because the hiccups didn’t wear off for over an hour. Cai and I both agreed it would seem suspicious if we were the only ones not hiccupping, so we pretended and got a little lightheaded. Hiccups are hard to fake.

It was another good day. Maybe an even better day than yesterday. Even with Maeve finding out about Fin and things getting more and more complicated. Even with my nerves about the entire coven discovering Fin at the equinox ritual tonight. None of it is big enough to harsh my vibe.

I almost feel normal. And I can’t remember ever feeling this way before. It’s nice.

“How’s your blood sugar doing?” Maeve asks. We’re sitting on my bed while Fin lies on the ground, all three cats curled up and purring along their furry body.

“You’re at 148,” Fin says, the nose on their tail twitching in my direction. I shiver a little bit. No matter how used to the Mystery I get, I’ll never get used to the tail-nose.

“We need a signal for if I go any lower than 140,” I say.

“It will be more difficult to sense the nuance in your blood glucose from outside the house. Perhaps I should just . . .”

“Oh no, you’re staying outside, you’ll be able to smell her fine from there,” Maeve says.

“Gross,” I mutter. But Maeve’s right. We’ve decided Fin needs to stay outside the house for the equinox gathering tonight. They’re confident no one will be able to see or hear them, but Maeve and I don’t want to risk it. Especially now that we know Fin’s invisibility to other magical people doesn’t hold up if my blood sugar goes wonky.

“I’ll have Mars get your attention if you dip below 140,” Fin says.

“Do we know what happens when it’s high?” Maeve asks.

I look at Fin and they shrug.

“I was able to remain invisible to Maeve at the moment of my binding, and you were rather high then, so I do believe my stealth struggles are restricted to low blood glucose.”

“Okay, cool. But don’t have Mars bite or scratch me or whatever, okay?”

“I wouldn’t dream of it,” Fin says, but the glint in their eye makes me wonder if I’ve handed them that little bit of painful mischief on a silver platter.

There’s a knock on my bedroom door.

“Girls, the Haemons will be arriving any minute,” Dad says. “We need you downstairs, stat. And don’t forget your offerings.”

“Coming,” we both call, and then exchange a meaningful glance.

“We can do this,” Maeve whispers.

“No hijinks,” I mutter to Fin. “This is our entire coven, not the cafeteria.”

“I’ll see myself out,” Fin says, and walks to the window, opens it up, and climbs out.
