CHAPTER TEN

Julie let out a breath and smoothed the front of her gown as she looked into the mirror. Her heart fluttered in her chest. This dress had looked incredible at Iris Fashions in Avalon Village, but standing in her little apartment, it looked like something from another world.

It is something from another world, Hat pointed out.

Oh, shut up. Julie couldn’t stop grinning. She turned this way and that, watching as the ballgown’s poofy skirt shifted and shimmered in the cold electric light. The bodice was decorated with deep red roses and vines that twined over her chest, and the whole thing was as light as air.

“Oh, darling,” Lillie murmured. “You look incredible.”

Julie turned. “Lillie! You didn’t have to climb all those stairs.”

“I thought I’d come up and give you a hand, dear. Tightening your corset and all that.” Lillie shuffled across the floor, her wrinkled old face creasing in a bright grin, and ran a hand over the skirt. “My, my! What fabric is this?”

“I don’t know,” Julie confessed.

“Me neither. Never liked sewing. Driving’s more my speed if you get my drift.” Lillie cackled. “Do you need any help?”

Considering the dress had magically altered itself to fit like a second skin, Julie didn’t, but she glanced at the diamond necklace on her nightstand.

Don’t! Hat sputtered.

“Could you help me with my necklace?” Julie asked, resting a hand on the space between her collarbones.

“Ooh, look at that bling!” Lillie cooed. She scooped Hat, who was currently in the form of a beautiful diamond necklace, into her hands.

You’ll regret this, Hat grumbled.

Julie smirked. “Isn’t it lovely? I, uh, borrowed it from Taylor’s sister.” Her toes curled at the lie, but she couldn’t expose sweet little Lillie to the paranormal world.

She turned to face the mirror, and Lillie gently looped the necklace around her neck and clasped it at the back. It sparkled on Julie’s chest. Lillie’s grin widened, and she squeezed the tops of Julie’s arms. “You’re beautiful, dear. Inside and out. Never, ever forget it.”

“Aw, Lillie.” Julie laid a hand over the older woman’s. “Thank you.”

A powerful engine purred outside, and Lillie raised her head. “I would know that sound anywhere! Is that a Rolls?”

Julie hurried to the window and groaned at the sight of the elegant silver vehicle waiting at the curb. She wondered if a Rolls Royce had ever been seen in this part of Brooklyn before. A white-gloved chauffeur opened the door, and Taylor stepped out in a smartly cut dusky-purple suit.

“Be still, my heart!” Lillie uttered dramatically.

Julie giggled. “Lillie!”

“He’s quite something, but make no mistake, dear. So are you.” Lillie smirked. “Go knock that young man’s socks off, you understand?” She gave Julie a light slap on the ass. “Maybe more than his socks!”

Julie was still blushing as she made her way down the stairs, Lillie helping with the back of her dress, and into the garage. Taylor had seen her in the dress since he’d bought it for her, but his eyes still popped.

“Hello,” he managed huskily.
