Chapter Eleven
After the long day of travel and marathon sex, I have to take a nap to recover, since I feel completely depleted even though I can feel my magic recharging stronger than ever after the exertion. Itâs a relief to relax and lounge about, since I canât remember doing that since⦠Well, ever. Iâve worked hard for Silas for years, and then Iâve worked hard at the academy. Some down time is just what we all need.
In the evening, we are summoned to dinner. We make our way down to a formal dining room with a long, mahogany table topped with elegant, tapered candles, silver utensils, crystal goblets, and fine China. Iâve obviously never dined with a queen before, and even the nicest dress I had feels inadequate in this setting.
The attendant who brought us down tells us to be seated, the royal family will be in soon. We all scoot in awkwardly, admiring the oil paintings on the walls and the crystal chandeliers hanging from the soaring ceilings overhead. The silence is broken by the sound of stampeding feet. I tense, reaching for Cleo, who lies unobtrusively by my plate among my silverware.
Before I can move, the tall double doors with elegant carvings in the wood fly open, and what can only be described as a herd of children stare in at us with wide, round eyes that are distinctly catlike in some way, even though theyâre all different colors, from the palest blue-green to the darkest ebony, from shimmering gold to stormy silver.
âSee?â one of them says, a girl who looks to be about fifteen and one of the oldest. âAll white.â
âTold you,â says a thin boy with darker skin and long, shiny hair. âTheyâre from the same place as Shadow.â
âShadowâs our daddy,â says a little girl who looks about eight, the first one to address us directly. âOne of them, at least. We got lots of dads, but only one mom.â
âShe already knows that,â says the first girl who spoke, rolling her eyes.
âCan we have what sheâs having?â Rocco asks, leaning in to whisper in my ear.
I havenât even thought this far ahead, but if I have kids, will they know who their father is? Will I? Will I want to? Will they? Will their fathers? What if they get jealous or competitive, or one of them canât have kids and feels inadequate? What if I canât, and I fail them all? This lifestyle is so much more complicated than Iâve even begun to explore. Itâs not just hot, nasty sex parties. Itâs going to be a lot of work. Am I ready to give my men all the children they want? And what if one of them doesnât want kids at all? My head is spinning, and I have to take a few breaths to keep from panicking.
âYou alright?â Darius asks, his warm hand covering mine and comforting me.
âYou ever going to tell me why you speak their language?â I ask, remembering his fluent greeting earlier.
