With a belly filled with bourbon—and nothing else—Donovan returned to Stoker & Steele. They’d forgotten to actually eat lunch, lost in the rehashing of old stories and future dreams. Donovan thought maybe he and Anna might someday be friends again, although Robert was another story. According to her, he was now hell-bent on winning Progressive Field for Winshaw Creative, if only to rub Sam Shelby’s nose in it. Donovan was merely a secondary enemy at that point.

Anna was definitely right about one thing: he needed to figure out where he stood with Sam. After their talk last night, were they over? Donovan wouldn’t give up so easily, not now that he’d talked about Sam with someone else and realized how much he had accidentally started to care. And he did care about Sam. Damn it.

Except Sam’s messy office was empty with not even a dirty coffee cup to allude to his earlier presence. Donovan glanced into conference rooms, the break room, and even the men’s bathroom, but nothing—no sign of Sam.

Monica looked up from typing at her desk when he approached. “You look confused,” she said.

“Do I?”

“Lately?” She nodded. “Most of the time. What’s the matter with you?”

“Have you seen Sam?”

She pulled a pencil from her bright orange updo and tapped it against the side of her glasses. “He took the afternoon off.”

“Hmm.” He put his hands on his hips.

Monica looked left and right before whispering, “Did you screw things up?”

“What? No! I just need to talk to him.”

“Mm-hmm,” she muttered.

“Mm-hmm,” he mimicked and ducked into his office when she threw the pencil at him.

Of course. The one time he really, really wanted to talk to Sam, he wasn’t there. Donovan knew the afternoon would now crawl like a hoard of turtles. He would stop by Sam’s apartment after work that night. It was time they hashed out some details—before anyone got hurt.
