“You sure this is the guy?” Rhett asks for the fifth time. I tamp down my growl and cut him an irritated look. He throws his hands up, “Okay, okay. You know what you’re doing, I’ll stop questioning you.” Yeah right. The day Rhett doesn’t suss out something until he’s content, is the day I’ll ride a unicorn through a rainbow made of skittles.

“He’s the guy, believe me, I won’t be forgetting his ugly mug anytime soon.”

Rhett nods and tightens his grip on the brass knuckles. His metal-clad fist flies through the air and connects with Kenny’s cheekbone—a sickening crack resounds through the rundown warehouse. He lands a few more punches and I walk over to the dilapidated iron workbench, picking up the file I have on this guy. He’s a low-level wannabe thug who kidnaps girls as young as six from overcrowded group homes and sells them to the highest bidder at the skin markets in Los Angeles. No one seems to care enough about the girls to do anything, so here we are, delivering our own brand of justice.

Rhett relents, and I slide the file into the back of my pants, my attention on Kenny again. He coughs up blood, spitting it at my feet like the asshole he is. “I know all about you, Jagger Black,” he smiles widely, blood coating his ghastly yellow teeth.

“You don’t know shit about me,” I say, landing a solid hit to his abdomen. I would’ve gone for his face, but I don’t want more of his blood touching me.

Kenny wheezes, a wet, raspy sound, coughing around a fit of laughter like a maniac.

“You can’t kill me, boy. Don’t you think I’m smart enough to take out some insurance policies? I knew the police and your dead daddy’s gang were snooping around me. You kill me and your darkest secrets get exposed.” Doubtful.

“What’s he talking about?” Rhett mutters to me, cleaning his hands with the Clorox wipes he brought. The dude might be a bloodthirsty bastard who’ll happily bathe in his enemies’ entrails, but he has a weird hangup with cleaning his hands obsessively, even before the mayhem is complete.

“Fuck if I know,” I respond evenly.

“Oh, your henchman doesn’t know the truth, then?” Kenny cackles, and I grab him by the collar of his shirt.

“Your lies won’t save you here, Kenny. I hope you’ve made peace with the devil because you’ll be ringing his doorbell soon. You think you’re important and have pull in this town? Let me be the first to tell you, you’re not—you’re barely a pawn in someone else’s game. A coward like you will never be on top.”

Rhett starts a slow clap, and I shake my head at him, “Bravo, Black. Quite the speech. Now, if you’re done playing with your food, can we finish this fucker? I wanna get home and dip my cock in the first woman who answers my call … or two.” He grins at me, all teeth and viciousness.

“Call in a cleanup,” I tell Rhett.
