âHEY, MR. WOODSON,â I SAY, popping my head into the doorway of his office the next day. I feel my phone vibrating in my pocket, but I ignore it for now. âUh, just wanted to make sure everythingâs all right because you, um, missed the soccer game, and the speakers werenât up andââ
âOh! Natty! Iâm so sorry. And thereâs a delay with the pom-pom order . . . complications with the budget allotment.â He shakes his head. âI donât have good excuses. Please forgive me. Did it go okay?â
âOh yeah.â I smile. âIt went really well. People were definitely pumped up.â
The phone rings and he holds up a finger that I should wait a minute, so I do, and I stand outside the office, but one minute turns into a really long time, and I need to get to practice.
I scribble a note on a piece of paper and run in quickly to leave it on his desk.
Mr. WoodsonâOur next practice is happening in the gym right now. Come if you can! Thanks, Natty
I head to the gym, and surprisingly, everyone is already there when I walk in.
âSo we all know the girls soccer game is Monday after school? Then we probably have one more event before the pep rally. We have a date set, but we need to start rallying the community!â I crack up. âPun intended! Anyway, weâll get to that in a minute.â
âWait, so what are these events if theyâre not pep rallies?â Wade asks. âPlease clarify.â
He seems genuinely confused this time, not like heâs making trouble.
âTheyâre just, like, us getting everyone excited at games and meets and stuff,â I explain. âWeâre going to try to be at most sporting events to cheer everyone on and pump everyone up!â
He nods. âI donât totally understand this.â
âItâs okay . . . but hereâs the thing. For the pep rally our job really is to just get the school and whole community excited, like, in general.â
âExcited about what?â Braid asks.
âOur school! Miller Creek! Life! All the things.â I bounce back and forth from foot to foot.
âBut thereâs nothing to be excited about,â Tape replies, finishing the wallet sheâs making out of duct tape.
âGotta agree with her there,â Marcus says, and then Lance shoves him with his arm.
âDude,â Lance says under his breath.
I ignore all that because thereâs no time for negativity now. Or ever. But definitely not now when I feel like we are honestly making progress. I keep looking at the door to see where Mack is. She wasnât in Advisory today and I couldnât find her at lunch and she didnât show for any other classes either.
Luna, Terra, and I lead the routine again for the group and demonstrate, step by step, and I think the repetition will really help. The more we do this, the better it will be!
We do the air trumpeting in, windmill over our heads, pointing up and across our bodies, the side steps and claps, the face display, shaking our fingers, the box step.
