2.Objective: the puppy sits on the place board a longer time.
Hold a treat several inches above the pup’s head and wait for him to sit. Repeat several times.
When the pup is sitting promptly at the sight of the hand above his head, start delaying the payments for a half second, then a second, and then two seconds.
3.Objective: the puppy sits on the place board for fifteen seconds.
This exercise takes trainer motor skills, so first practice your fast delivery of treats. Put a cup on the place board and practice reaching in the treat pouch, picking a treat, and delivering it as fast as you can. This is a barrage of payments. When you are fast with the cup, get the pup.
Start with barrage payments for sitting. When the pup sits, start paying with treats rapidly enough that he doesn’t have a chance to get up. Pay ten treats successively without him getting up. Then, lure him off the board and back on and repeat the barrage payment.
Then repeat the ten-successive-treats barrage as above.
Then sit the pup on the place board, wait one-half second, and pay. Gradually, over a couple of training sessions, build from one-half second, to one second, to two seconds, and up to fifteen seconds.
A puppy fails to hold a sit because he is trying to get to the treat source, which is you. A few barrages of treats as above will allow him to relax in the expectation of getting more treats shortly. This practice leads to a puppy that sits in a relaxed manner. The puppy learns that sitting pays more than getting up pays. This training is the cornerstone of impulse control and the foundation upon which is built the behavior of staying calm in a high-distraction environment.
